An aroma pleasing to the Lord

According the Biblegateway.com there are 37 instances of  "an aroma pleasing to the Lord." and 36 instances of a fragrance or fragant in the Old Testament.  The New Testament speaks of aroma or fragrance about six times.


So what is this aroma or fragrance that is pleasing to our Almighty Father?  This was an interesting Bible study that our pastor took us through yesterday.  Connecting dots that I would not have thought to do.


Too many times we see the Old Testament as just a bunch of names or laws that no longer apply to us.  But the insight of the Old Testatament allows us to see the beauty of our relationship with the Lord.


Leviticus a great book of laws and sacrifices.

Leviticus 1:13 You are to wash the internal organs and the legs with water, and the priest is to bring all of them and burn them on the altar. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the LORD.

Leviticus 1:17He shall tear it open by the wings, not dividing it completely, and then the priest shall burn it on the wood that is burning on the altar. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the LORD.  


Leviticus 2:2 and take it to Aaron’s sons the priests. The priest shall take a handful of the flour and oil, together with all the incense, and burn this as a memorial portion on the altar, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the LORD.


In just these few passages what do you see?  What is that sweet aroma?  At first reading, we may be like ew gross? Killing an animal, washing out its insides and barbecuing it is a pleasing aroma to the Lord?  


The OT followers had a lot of rules and laws to live by.  A lot that just don't make sense to us.  Sacrificing certain animals for certain people for certain things at certain times of the years.  A lot to remember.


Now connect this to the New Testament:


2 Corinthians 2:14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere.  

2 Corinthians 2:15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.  

2 Corinthians 2:16  To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task?


Listen to that we that are saved by God's grace to be called to His Holy Name to be obedient to Him - we are to be that aroma to others that do not know Him.


Aroma is our obedience.  The OT followers of God were being obedient in their sacrifices and offering incense.  Jesus was a sweet aroma to God because of His obedience on the cross.  We are that sweet aroma to the Lord through our obedience in spreading His Holy Word.


Ahhhh!  The sweet aroma of salvation from our Lord Jesus Christ.
