In the ancient days, names were taken very seriously. You thought about the characteristic traits you wanted your child to have and the mom probably thought about the baby's activity inside of them and they probably thought about what he/she was going to do throughout their life before choosing a name for their child. It had to be fitting.
Mary and Joseph had a different experience than most Jewish couples. They were told by God's angel what name to give to their child.
It is no wonder that God chose the name above all names for our Savior, His Son - Jesus. Jesus means "salvation" or "he saves." How fitting!
There are many names given to this awesome human being who made the ultimate sacrifice for each and everyone of us. Jesus, Emmanuel, The King of Kings, The Lamb, Our Prince of Peace....When you think of His name what do you see, feel, hear?
It always amazes me when I meditate on my Lord. That He who created us was willing to give up all His riches in heaven in order to become one of us. To feel what we feel. To create Himself into a tiny, helpless baby dependent upon Mary for nurturing and guidance. To have to turn to His Father in Heaven for comfort, support, peace.
His name tells his story. He came into this world a helpless child in order to save us from ourselves. So that we may have forgiveness of sins and everlasting life with our Holy Father in Heaven. "He Saves!"
